Ambassador Vijay Nambiar – Chairman (India)

Ambassador Vijay Nambiar served in the Indian Foreign Service from 1967 to 2004, after which he was Deputy National Security Advisor to the Government of India (2005-06) and then for 11 years as Under Secretary-General in the United Nations (2006-2016)  he worked as Special Advisor to the Secretary-General.

He holds a post-graduate degree from Bombay University. He was awarded the Chancellor’s Gold Medal of the University in 1965. From 1964 to 1967, he worked with Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd.

In his professional career, he served in bilateral and multilateral appointments in Belgrade and New York. He was Director in charge of multilateral affairs at the headquarters in New Delhi in the early 1980s during the Nonaligned Summit in Delhi and India’s Chairmanship of the Movement.

In year 2007, he was appointed Chef de Cabinet to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in which position he served till 2012. Meanwhile, he was also Special Advisor to the Secretary General on Myanmar, a position in which he continued until end-2016.

On completion of his assignments with the United Nations, Ambassador Nambiar joined the Safesea group in India as Chairman.
